It is starting to really get on my nerves when people complain about going to the dentist. Yes, it hurts. Yes, it feels like an invasion of your privacy to have other people’s fingers in your mouth. Yes, the fluoride tastes icky. But does anybody appreciate anymore how much proper dental care improves their quality of life?
You didn’t HAVE to go to the dentist because your tooth felt like it was on fire, you could have stayed home and been reduced to eating lukewarm, lumpy oatmeal for the next three months until that bothersome thing fell out. You didn’t HAVE to go to the dentist and get a crown on that cavity, you could have just let it turn black and spongy and rot away. You didn’t HAVE to get the plaque scraped off your teeth, you could have let it fester, turning yellow because you can’t remember to brush. You didn’t HAVE to do any of that—you chose to!
The dentist fixed your pain and made your smile radiant despite the fact that you feel having 3 Cokes a day is necessary, and now you’re complaining about it? You’re complaining because the dentist just charged you for the eight years he spent in dental school? Because he charged you for the office space where he can treat you in a sterile environment? Because he charged you for the incredibly advanced chemicals he used to make your mouth beautiful and clean and pain-free? Because he charged you for bleaching the decades of coffee stains from your two buckteeth? Oh, and did I hear somebody gripe that it hurts to get those shots from your doctor that keep you from getting sick? No? But you’ll whine about the shot that numbs your mouth so you can get your tooth fixed and get back to eating ice cream, drinking lemonade, and sucking on Jolly Ranchers, all without ever touching a piece of floss.
Yes, dental visits are uncomfortable and can taste terrible. Get over it. If you don’t like the dentist, don’t go-- it’s as simple as that. Proper dental hygiene is still a privilege, not a right, and if you don’t appreciate it then maybe you don’t deserve it. Stop going to the dentist, right now, and get back to me in fifteen years. THEN we’ll talk about how terrible the dentist is.
