Bargain Shopping

Before every term or semester, we get free money from the government for being poor married students. Our next flow of monies is due this week, so we have been planning a few large expenses. Here’s what we planned to spend:

Bookshelf: 80
Dresser: 80
Desk: 80
Organization units for the living room: 30
Total: $270.00

Here’s what we actually spent:
Bookshelf: 30
Dresser: 25
Desk: 20
Organization: 20
Because we did so well, we decided to get a few other items we have been wanting, but didn’t think would be in our budget:
An office chair: 40
An extra sitting chair for the living room: 25
Total: $160.00

We were STILL within the limits of our allotted budget! (And let me tell you, this budget was devised after we had set aside amounts for tithing and savings.) So we decided to fix up the desk, which is a Craigslist find. It is currently painted white with peeling corners of the drawers showing blue, has pink knobs and is a little dirty inside the drawers. We purchased black paint tonight in preparation for the makeover, as well as four pewter-looking knobs decorated with a nice little leaf pattern. The total for those supplies comes in at 20. Still looking good!

So, now that we have made so many great purchases, what do we do next? Why, invite people over to admire! We are having a barbecue on Saturday to celebrate the first US game of the World Cup, and I guess it will be a celebration of awesome bargain shopping too!

  2. gotta love gov grants! waita budget, i want to see a pic of the finished desk when it's done! speaking of good deals, and in reply to your comment on my new computer post, we actually got our mac refurbished. when someone goes into the apple store and buys a laptop with a 15 inch screen, and then bring it back the next day because they decided they wanted a bigger one apple takes the returned laptop makes sure that it's just like new and then sells it again for $300 cheaper.
